Cardboard Box

The cardboard box
When,
Top-flaps opened,
Sat invoking
Inner mysteries
Of the used.

For days,
For weeks
Its  jumbled  tokens
Weathered soaking,

Broken by a
Burning sun,
Long by the
Day and night,

Packed tight
For the peeker
Passers-by,
Who might try
The sneakers, or

Business shoes
Whose homely formal

Joined the rest—–
Normal
Unwanted
For  the never,
Spoke to me

Of a generous try
Of kindness,
Of pity
Who missed the mark—
For free.
